I was browsing www.jabber.org and found two extensions. Jabber claims
to be "the coolest IM system on the planet" and "A powerful platform
for XML messaging and presence".

Clicking on the DevZone tab at the top shows

New Jabber/SMTP Bridge - Theoretic Solutions has posted code
for a new bridge between Jabber and email

Jogger - a Jabber-enabled blogger

Tying a Jabber system in front of a Nodal system would be powerful.
