My observation is that standards and rules, in the form of apis and
data structures, are the only possible counter to "suite suckiness". (04)
File systems are general purpose. I can pick any of hundreds of
editors to operate on one. And I can pick different tools to operate
on different types in the file system. (05)
When you're locked into an environment that has only one tool, and
that tool must be used for all types, "suckiness" is the inevitable
result, because no one organization can duplicate the thinking of the
other 99, and no one tool can ever hope to be equally suited for all
tasks. (06)
It is precisely the need to avoid suite suckiness that motivates the
need for apis and standards. On the other hand, I agree that having
to do that work *also* sucks....
